Wij vertellen hier het verhaal van onze nieuwe collega Joanne, haar man Regilio en hun twee heerlijke kinderen van 1 en 3 jaar oud.

(Here is the story of our new colleague Joanne, her husband Regilio and their two fabulous kids of 1 and 3 years old) 

In januari kwamen ze hier wonen op ons prachtige eiland  Sint Eustatius maar jammer genoeg sloeg eind maart het noodlot toe...

(in January they arrived on our beautiful island of Statia but unfortunately the end of March thing took a turn for the worst) 

Eind maart kreeg het hele gezin Covid, en ook al schijnt deze variant niet zo heftig te zijn, het ging toch mis bij Regilio. 

(At the end of March the whole family got infected with Covid and though the Omicron does not seem to be an extreme variant, things went completely wrong with Regilio) 

Hij werd behoorlijk ziek maar het duurde te lang voor er medische hulp kwam omdat het gezin nog niet officieel was ingeschreven en dus niet verzekerd was. Eerlijkheidshalve moet ik ook aangeven dat dat een aantal maanden duurt. 

(He got pretty ill but it took too long before medical help arrived because the family is not official Statian and they are not insured because of that) 

Het heeft 4 dagen geduurd voordat uiteindelijk Regilio werd opgenomen. Helaas ging het nog niet beter. Hij moest naar Sint Maarten uitgevlogen worden.. Ook deze beslissing duurde te lang. Uiteindelijk is Regilio in de helicopter overleden. Joanne met haar twee kinderen achterlatend. 

(It took 4 days before eventually Regilio was admitted to hospital. Unfortunately things did not get any better. He needed to be flown to SXM. Also this decision took too much time. Regilio passed away in the helicopter, leaving Joanne with their two kids) 

Ook al is Joanne diepbedroefd, ze is blij en dankbaar voor alle steun die ze krijgt. Ze weet dat God in alles voorziet. God heeft al voorzien in een geweldig schoolbestuur wat alle kosten van de repatriëring en begrafenis op zich neemt. Fantastisch natuurlijk! Dit neemt niet weg dat alles geld gaat kosten en dat Joanne alles alleen moet gaan bekostigen zoals huur, levensmiddelen en school. 

(Even though Joanne is heartbroken, she is so thankful for all the help she receives. She knows that God provides in everything. God already provided in a fabulous schoolbord who takes care of all costs of repatriation and funeral. The fact remains that Joanne has to build up a new life.)
