On June 23rd, hundreds of indigenous communities in Brazil will be marching in Brasília, the nation's capital, to witness and protest the final senate voting of the "Marco Temporal" bill.
Meaning that the Brazilian Supreme Court will decide if occupancy of territory by the time of the promulgation of the Brazilian constitution is determinant to indigenous land demarcation.
In short: only communities that had occupied their territories by 1988 will have right to their land, and several communities would be facing eviction and land grabbing by agricultural developers in protected areas.
This bill ignores 500 years of forced migration, expropriation, and dispossession of indigenous communities all over Brazil and would also lead to ecological disaster in many parts of the country.
The Tupinambás de Olivença need our help right now to join this historical march – they hope to charter two buses in order to bring members of their community there.
