De actie stopt over twee dagen omdat de beveiliging is overgedragen aan een ander bedrijf en ik ook daar weer problemen verwacht omdat ik in Tanzania woon en een Nederlandse bankrekening heb.

Wim is inmiddels verscheidene keren in Tanzania naar het ziekenhuis geweest en onderzocht door verschillende artsen in verschillende disciplines.

Ze zijn het over één ding allemaal eens, Wim heeft geen PSP maar Myasthenia gravis.

Komende maandag wordt hij daarop getest in een ander ziekenhuis.

Als de test positief is, krijgt hij andere medicatie. De artsen verwachten dat hij daarmee flink zal herstellen.

In the meantime Wim is in Tanzania for almost three weeks now.

A lot has happened in that time. We went to a neurologist because Wim still wants to know where the potassium deficiency for which he is taking a supplement comes from and what influence it has on his disease.

As a result, everything has started to roll. The medication has been adjusted. In addition to the neurologist, an endocrinologist also monitors the developments.

We're going to the hospital again on Thursday for a blood test and to discuss the outcome with the doctors.

We are accompanied by the local doctor who also takes us to the hospital.

The results so far are very positive and there is hope that Wim could recover somewhat.

Inmiddels is Wim bijna drie weken in Tanzania.

Er is in die tijd heel veel gebeurd. We zijn naar een neuroloog geweest omdat Wim nog altijd graag wil weten waar het tekort aan kalium waar hij een supplement voor krijgt vandaan komt en wat voor invloed dat heeft op zijn ziekte.

Daardoor is er van alles aan het rollen geraakt. De medicatie is aangepast. Naast de neuroloog kijkt ook een endocrinoloog mee naar de ontwikkelingen.

Donderdag gaan we weer heen voor een bloedonderzoek en om één an ander te bespreken.

We worden begeleid door de plaatselijke arts die ons ook naar het ziekenhuis brengt.

De uitslagen zijn tot zover erg positief en er is hoop dat Wim nog wat zou kunnen herstellen.

Er is nog heel veel te regelen, maar langzaam maar zeker begint iedereen op elkaar ingespeeld te raken.

We're on our way! The first flight done, two more to go. We have to wait a very long time for Montreal (11 hours), but we have a nice time together. Actually not much different from the past few weeks in the hospital, just a lot more people to see. Tonight at six o'clock local time we fly to Amsterdam, a very short transfer there and then we continue to Dar es Salaam where the doctor will pick us up from the airport.

We zijn onderweg!

De eerste vlucht achter de rug, nog twee te gaan. Op Montreal moeten we wel onwijs lang wachten (11 uur), maar we zitten gezellig samen. Eigenlijk niet heel veel anders dan de afgelopen weken in het ziekenhuis, alleen veel meer mensen te zien.

Vanavond zes uur lokale tijd vliegen we naar Amsterdam, daar een heel korte overstap en dan gaan we door naar Dar es Salaam waar de dokter ons ophaalt van het vliegveld.

Geweldig alle mensen die de reis voor Wim mogelijk maken!

Ik heb inmiddels geboekt.

1 september gaat het avontuur in alle vroegte beginnen.

Morgen gaat de dokter van het hospital dat vlak bij ons is voor een bed kijken.

Andere aanpassingen en hulpmiddelen gaan we doen en aanschaffen als we thuis zijn, want Tanziaanse fundies (experts) kunnen nogal eens eigenwijs zijn en iets anders installeren dan waar je om vraagt.

In 2019, my dear brother Wim, who lives in Canada, was diagnosed with PSP, a progressive disease that affects the nerves in the brain. 

In 2021 he had to stop working and sell his beautiful truck. 

He can now hardly talk, can no longer walk and other motor functions are also increasingly failing. That means he needs a lot of help. 

Help he needs to get, because Wim never asks for anything for himself! 

He still tries to make it as easy as possible for others. 

In March 2024 he fell at home and broke his upper arm. He was not allowed to use his arm for six weeks, which further limited him as he could no longer walk with his walker. Unfortunately, after those six weeks it turned out that the fracture had ruptured further and Wim is not eligible for surgery in Canada due to his illness.

He could not return home because he could not use a wheelchair there. And he needs care 24 hours a day. Wim had to stay in the hospital until a place is available elsewhere. 

Wim fell into depression. I almost lost all contact with him because he barely used his phone anymore. 

In mid-July 2024, I received an emergency call from his friend who visits and cares for him daily. 

My dear brother Wim would receive euthanasia on the thirteenth of August. But his friend said he wasn't ready for that yet. And while family and friends prepared to say goodbye, I booked a flight from Tanzania to Canada to take stock. 

I had to see with my own eyes what the situation was like for Wim and how he was doing!

Well, it's a pretty hopeless situation. Because of the PSP he can hardly speak, can no longer walk, can no longer use a smartphone. Hospital care is not really focused on nursing a person with such a condition. And the food is terribly bad.

When I was there Wim and I talked a lot, including about his reasons for euthanasia and he decided against it. Also he did not want to sign for the next period of three months or six months. He is not in pain, his only reason for wanting to die is the hopelessness of his situation.

Now Wim would really like to see his dream come true and go back to Tanzania with me. 

And that's the only thing I can offer him. A temporary place in my life in that beautiful country among beautiful people! For that I ask your help. 

Money is needed for the trip and for some adjustments at home such as a hospital bed, grab rails in the bathroom and 24-hour care for the time that Wim is with me. 

The doctor has given the green light, Wim can handle this journey.
